Why international equities?

We believe that international equities form an essential component of most investment portfolios. This belief is rooted in the unique advantages and opportunities that international markets offer. International equities open the door to more investment opportunities, from world-class businesses to niche leaders, which are often traded at lower valuations relative to their North American counterparts.

Different countries often have structural advantages in specific sectors, which can lead to superior performance for companies within select industries. Examples include Japan's prowess in specialty chemicals for semiconductors, the Nordic countries' advancements in renewable technologies, Germany's excellence in engineering, France’s tradition in luxury brands, and India's burgeoning IT sector. Investing in international equities allows us to leverage these inherent strengths and capitalize on sector-specific growth. By taking a global perspective, we are able to find the best businesses.

Diversification is a cornerstone of investment risk management. By holding international equities, investors can achieve greater diversification, not only in terms of geographic spread but also in economic exposures, currency variations, and sector dynamics. This diversification can potentially reduce portfolio risk.

Finally, the global economic landscape is continually evolving, with emerging markets and developing economies playing a significant role. International equities provide a conduit to participate in these growth dynamics, tapping into regions with faster economic growth, demographic advantages, and expanding consumer bases.

Investment Philosophy.

Tancook believes that quality-oriented, long-term investing using a disciplined and repeatable approach will build real wealth over time. We have a value-conscious owner’s perspective, combining focus, discipline and patience with a long investment horizon.

We cannot control the timing and magnitude of our investment successes, but we can control the steady application of our process. By systematically creating the opportunity for our investment decisions to work out, we can help our clients and their underlying beneficiaries meet their investment goals.

Our perspective is global. Our goal is to invest in a portfolio of world-class businesses, regardless of their locations. We compare and contrast companies on a global level and only select the best for our portfolios.

Our investment horizon is long term. Our research approach is focused on identifying how a business could evolve over the next decade or longer. We try to avoid market noises created by quarterly earnings.

We maintain a contrarian mindset. We want to own the best companies, but only when their valuation offers prospects for attractive investment returns. In order to achieve such a task, we seek to take advantage of short-term market volatility created by cyclical issues or transient company-specific factors.

We prioritize companies with improving fundamentals, and try to avoid businesses with deteriorating competitive advantages. Our goal is to identify such improvements before they are fully priced in by the market.

Investment Process.

Proven and Repeatable

There are two facets to our stock selection process. First, we identify whether a company is high quality based on its financial strength, profitability, and sustainable competitive position. If it meets our quality standards, then it is added to our Monitor List. Second, using a blend of valuation measures, we determine which of the high-quality companies on the Monitor List currently offer the most attractive opportunities.

Views on Sustainability.

At Tancook, we view sustainability as a long-term investment opportunity. As our societies, including governments, corporations and individuals, increasingly factor sustainability into their economic decision making, massive investments are required. We are at the early stage of a long journey.

Our Funds.

Our strategies are centered on identifying businesses with inherent structural strengths and promising prospects. We prioritize companies with a solid financial track record and robust business rationale. This approach includes pinpointing companies at the early stages of fundamental improvement, investing in them ahead of broader market recognition. Embracing a contrarian perspective, we exercise rigorous discipline in research and valuation.

Tancook International Small Cap Fund.

The Tancook International Equity Fund seeks to invest in world-class large and mid- capitalization companies whose domicile or principal operations are outside North America. For an investor in North America, the Fund represents an effective way to diversify into foreign equity markets.

The Fund’s investment strategy is to identify businesses with structural advantages and good long-term prospects. Other investment criteria include a record of high and consistent profitability, financial strength, and capable management.

The Tancook Small Cap Fund specializes in investing in outstanding small cap businesses. Our strategy centers on identifying niche-leaders with excellent cash flows and ample growth opportunities. We believe that the international small cap sector presents a fertile ground for capitalizing on market inefficiencies. By focusing on companies that receive less attention, we aim to uncover and exploit value opportunities.
